Although it's optional to hire a guide, it's recommended because their knowledge can add a lot to the experience.
You should bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a variety of clothing. You should also bring extra batteries for your phone and camera, snacks, water or isotonic drinks, insect repellent and lipstick.
You can't bring backpacks, bags, or purses larger than 40 x 35 x 20 cm (16 x 14 x 8 inches) into Machu Picchu. You also can't bring food or household items.
Although the risk of injury is relatively low, it's recommended to get hiking insurance in case of an accident or emergency
